'I was a complete beginner to DJing and I covered a wide range of skills with Abby over a 10 lesson block booking period. Abby pointed to me a range of useful resources for music discovery and editing that I use daily to this day. Also taking me through and helping me navigate the confusing amount of choice in getting a home DJ setup (and cutting through the noise in a very overpriced world of shiny kit). I was showered with practical insight about files, technique, styles as well as solidly covering the basics (phrasing, beat matching, effects, cueing).
Abby was consistently patient and well aware of the frustration that comes with growth. She was astute enough to adapt her teaching style to my learning style e.g pulled together a step by step video I could go back through via repetition in my own time along with bullet points. A breakthrough in transitions came quickly when I tried this.
We covered a huge amount of ground in a short space of time and Abby carefully keeps up encouragement and moving forward outside your comfort zone intuitively, especially getting recordings out there that you would never normally think to suppress your perfectionism and consider.
Abby covered every and any questions and struggle I had both in the lessons and made herself available to talk to outside of lessons. She’s also offered to cover a wide range of related interests depending on the DJ, opening up pathways for me to consider (radio production, music production, event).
It wasn’t a difficult decision to book another 10 lessons once my get on my feet period was over.
Finally, it’s worth accounting for the less obvious value. In setting up her own labels, fostering budding producers, holding down a club night series and radio shows and festivals, Abby walks the walk. As a bedroom DJ starting out, you’re able to see a number of pathways for yourself in action. Abby’s energy is infectious and inspirational and I would gladly point any friends her way when they are interested in starting out.’
